Christ Suffered Once – Broadcast for June 14, 2013

We were called to the hospital early in the morning to comfort a family. We were led into the hospital room where the family stood around their loved one who had just passed away not even an hour before. The man was a friend of ours and we mourned the loss with his family. When we saw him. he looked like he was asleep, he even had a slight smile on his face. But there was no life in him, he was gone. His suffering was finished.

In 1 Peter 3 we read: For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, (1 Peter 3:18 NKJV)

When Christ died; His suffering was finished, His body felt no more pain. His Spirit lived on and even continued in ministry. His death put to death the hold sin has on us so that we can be brought into relationship with God and can spend eternity in heaven. Jesus died and suffering ended; He will never need to suffer again for sin.

When I see a crucifix, an image of Christ on a cross; it reminds me of His suffering and death for my sin; but I always also think that Christ was removed from the cross and placed in a tomb and that within three days both the cross and the tomb were empty. Jesus died but rose from the grave. He suffered but will never have to suffer again for our sin. His death paid in full all charges against me and you for sin. If we have faith, then we are forgiven and suffering on account of sin is finished.

In like manner, we are freed from suffering as well. There is nothing we can suffer that will bring us forgiveness of sin, that has been finished once and for all.
